OUR MISSION
The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) chapter at Arizona State University is the professional society for biomedical engineering students here at ASU. We serve as the lead society and professional home for students in biomedical engineering. Although most of our membership does consist of BME students, we are open to all ASU students who are passionate about engineering, medicine, and healthcare.

Our mission is to promote and enhance knowledge and education in biomedical engineering and bioengineering worldwide and its utilization for human health and well-being. In addition to this, we seek to foster community interest in the fields of engineering and medicine, provide academic and career opportunities for our own members, and help students develop relationships with companies, faculty, and fellow students. To achieve this, our chapter focuses on four important aspects:

-
Exposure to Biomedical Engineering
-
Social Events
-
Volunteer Opportunities
-
Mentorship Program
Exposure to Biomedical Engineering
We host special guests at all our general body meetings that share their background and experience in the biomedical engineering or bioengineering field. Our speakers share a wealth of information about their experiences that will help students understand what career path to take and how to be successful in the BME industry. They (1) offer insight on what you can do as an undergraduate to achieve your goals, (2) provide a detailed explanation of their respective careers and specialties that may pique your interest, and (3) present an opportunity to develop a professional connection with an experienced engineer. Additionally, we arrange tours with local BME-related companies to give you a first-hand look at the kind of work they do.
Social Events
We coordinate many fun social events throughout the school year to help you connect with others in your major and to get to know everyone in BMES outside of a classroom environment. We also actively participate in intramural sports and plan other similar events to bring you and your peers together outside of stressful homework and review sessions. We’ve previously arranged ice cream socials, gone rock climbing, ice skating, and roller skating, gone to Stratum Laser Tag, and other exciting activities. Keep an eye on the Upcoming Events page to see what fun activity we're doing next!
Volunteer Opportunities
As advocates of community outreach, we have worked in conjunction with Project C.U.R.E. and participated in several charity walks in the past. Project C.U.R.E. is an organization that repairs medical equipment and ships it to third-world countries to improve global health. We regularly organize events to help repair the equipment as a group. We have also previously taken part in the American Cancer Association’s Relay for Life and Walk MS and have raised over $6000 for these organizations in a few years! We also are very active in promoting engineering education through high school visits. Each semester, members of BMES have the opportunity to present at high school classrooms and share their experiences as engineering students.
Mentorship Program
BMES also hosts a mentorship program for all incoming freshmen biomedical engineering students at ASU. Students have the opportunity to be paired with an upperclassman BME mentor and several other mentees in a tight-knit mentor-mentee family. This allows incoming freshmen to use their mentors as a resource to navigate college life, the BME degree program, and more. Students can also meet fellow incoming freshmen and stay connected throughout the year.
